VA Students:  The Van Arsdale Science Fair is just about one month out, so there is still plenty of time to put together a project (all grades) and/or a glider (4th – 6th)!  Projects can be Experimental, such as under which light a plant grows best or a Presentation of a scientific topic your child finds interesting, like the solar system or why bears hibernate.  They can do it on their own or grab a partner!  More information on project guidelines, the glider competition, as well as the sign-up are on the PTSA website. The sign-up deadline is this Sunday (1/21), all you need is the topic to sign-up!  http://vanarsdaleelementary.digitalpto.com/va-science-fair-rules-and-guidelines/
VA Siblings & Friends:  We are also looking for some middle school and/or high school volunteers to help-out at the Van Arsdale Science Fair on Friday afternoon/evening, February 16. Great opportunity if your big kids need service hours! No science expertise needed. They can sign-up through the link below & contact Kristen with any questions!
VA Parents & Colleagues:  We are looking for a few scientists or engineers to set-up a few live demos and be available for interaction and questions during the judging portion of the Science Fair. You’d be more than welcome to have your kids help you! This is expected to run approximately 4:30 – 6:00 pm on Feb. 16 (this is an early dismissal day), then you can stick around for the glider competition and awards or head-out!  Please contact Kristen directly to volunteer or share ideas/suggestions!

Grandparents Day

On Friday, November 17, 2017 Van Arsdale Elementary will host the annual Grandparent’s Day celebration. Grandparents (or other “special guest” if grandparents cannot attend) are invited to spend time with students in their classroom and enjoy special performances.

The following times are scheduled for grandparents to visit student classrooms:

Kindergarten                                     12:10 – 1:00

1st grade                                            12:40 – 1:30

Ms. Spencer’s 1st/2nd grade                                 12:40-1:30

2nd grade                                               1:10 – 2:00

3rd grade and 4th grade                                    1:35 – 2:30

6th grade                                                2:05 – 3:00

Mrs. Thompson’s 5th/6th grade                                 2:05-3:00

5th grade                                               2:20 – 3:15

There will be a light snack provided in each classroom or pod, and beverages will be located outside of each pod for convenience. A photo station will be available for grandparents to have a picture taken with their grandchild and receive a keepsake of this special day. Some of our Van Arsdale students will be providing ambient music near the cafeteria.

Parents, if you have more than one student that a grandparent/special guest needs to visit and times overlap, please let them know that most teachers begin first with their program and then will allow the student to share their classroom and a snack. This will help grandparents plan their time so they can visit each classroom. Also, please note that there will be limited parking that day. If possible, we wish to save the closer parking places for those grandparents who are less mobile. It might also be helpful for parents to “drop off” grandparents that afternoon. There is no parking allowed in the bus loop, however, the bus loop will be available for drop-off only for those who need assistance getting into the building. Additionally, please remember this day is meant for your child to spend time with their grandparent or other special guest. Since there is a large amount of guests, along with the kids in the classroom, it would be helpful if you only allow the grandparents & grandchildren to have their special time together.

If your child does not have a grandparent or other special guest to attend this event, please let us know. We have some Van Arsdale staff that will be present to try and spend time with these children.

If you have questions about this event, please contact Allison Farr at allisonfarr@comcast.net.

Read A Thon 2017

Welcome to the 2017  Van Arsdale Elementary Read A Thon!

We are excited to be promoting another vehicle to improve our students reading skills with varied minute goals per grade, per week.

While meeting and exceeding goals and donations, students will be able to work towards earning personal prizes as well as having their efforts contribute to possibly winning 1 of 3 class prizes.

The Read-a-thon is also a very important way for us to drive funding to our School for greatly needed items that will benefit all of our Students, Teachers, and School Community.

“We Read For You And Me!”

The initial list of proposed items needed include:  Shared Classroom Tablets, Smart Board Projector Replacement, Noise Cancelling Headphones, Regular Headphones, Binding Machine Replacement, Leveled Reader Books, Rubber Playground Surfaces, And Fixing The Outside Grass Area Used For The Much Beloved “Wall Ball”.

To support some of these efforts, our goal is to raise $18,000 with the Read A Thon this year!

Thank you in advance for your support of our Read A Thon and School!

Help Needed for the Audit Walk

We are partnering with Jefferson County Public Health to analysis the ways students can walk and bike to Van Arsdale, noting the current strengths in the system and where improvements can be made. The county has contracted with a consultant to map the neighboring areas and produce documents we can use for analysis and hopefully a case for a sidewalk north of the school to 80th. If you can join us for a couple of hours on Friday, October 20th, we can make quick work of the mapping. Just a few hours time to start us on a path to a safer community.

Please contact Lana Hearne at lana77@comcast.net with questions.
